You are halfway through your Udyam Registration form. Your name is in. Your Aadhaar is verified. Then the portal asks for a NIC Code, and you freeze.
You are not alone. This one field confuses more first-time applicants than any other. A NIC Code (National Industrial Classification Code) is the number that tells the government what your business actually does. Under NIC 2008, it has five digits at its most detailed level.
In this guide, we explain what it means, how to find yours, how NIC 2008 differs from the newer NIC 2025, and the mistakes that cost entrepreneurs time and money.
What Is NIC Code?
NIC Code is a numeric code, issued under India’s National Industrial Classification, that identifies the economic activity a business carries out.
NIC stands for National Industrial Classification. It is a statistical standard developed by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The government uses it to build a comparable database of economic activities across the country.
Why does that matter to you? Because every business activity, from growing wheat to writing software, has its own place in this system. When you quote your NIC Code, you tell the government which place is yours. The classification is used to:
- Group the economically active population by industry
- Track industrial production and distribution
- Prepare labour statistics and national income data
- Identify your business activity on registrations such as Udyam, and company or LLP incorporation
A Quick History of NIC
India’s first attempt at classifying industries was the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) of 1962. It was revised into the first National Industrial Classification in 1970, and has been updated several times since to match a changing economy. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (now DPIIT) moved companies from NIC 1987 to NIC 2008 through Press Note 4 (2014 Series) dated 26 June 2014. MoSPI released NIC 2025 in November 2025.
What Is the Full Form of NIC Code?
The full form is National Industrial Classification Code. Do not confuse it with the National Informatics Centre, which shares the same abbreviation but has nothing to do with business classification.
What Is NIC 2008?
NIC 2008: The 2008 revision of India’s National Industrial Classification, aligned with the international ISIC Rev. 4 standard. It organises activities into five levels, from broad sections down to detailed sub-classes.
NIC 2008 contains 21 sections (A to U), 88 divisions, 238 groups, 403 classes and 1,304 sub-classes. The more digits you add, the more specific the activity becomes.
| Level | Digits | What it identifies | Example |
| Section | Letter (A–U) | Broad economic sector | C – Manufacturing |
| Division | 2 | Industry within a section | 13 – Manufacture of textiles |
| Group | 3 | Group of related activities | 131 – Spinning, weaving and finishing of textiles |
| Class | 4 | Specific class of activities | 1311 – Preparation and spinning of textile fibres |
| Sub-class | 5 | Most detailed activity | 13111 – Preparation and spinning of cotton fibre, including blended cotton |
How Many Digits Does a NIC Code Have?
Under NIC 2008, the code runs from 2 digits (division) to 5 digits (sub-class). For Udyam Registration, you should pick the 5-digit sub-class, not a broad 2-digit division. Under NIC 2025, the most detailed level becomes a 6-digit sub-class. A Trading Example
| Level | Description |
| Section G | Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles |
| Division 45 | Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles |
| Group 451 / Class 4510 | Sale of motor vehicles |
| Sub-class 45101 | Wholesale and retail sale of new vehicles |
| Sub-class 45102 | Wholesale and retail sale of used motor vehicles |

What Is NIC 2025, and Does It Replace NIC 2008?
MoSPI released NIC 2025 on 18 November 2025. It aligns India with the UN’s ISIC Revision 5 and adds detail for newer activities such as renewable energy, fintech, e-commerce, digital services, AYUSH-based healthcare and handloom.
| Feature | NIC 2008 | NIC 2025 |
| Most detailed code | 5-digit sub-class | 6-digit sub-class |
| Sections | 21 (A–U) | 22 |

| Example (retail of readymade garments) | Check the 5-digit sub-class in Division 47 | 477101 |
Which one should you use for Udyam?
This is where it gets tricky. Published sources disagree. Some reviewed guides say the live Udyam portal still asks for NIC 2008 codes, while others say it accepts both NIC 2008 and NIC 2025. Do not guess. Open the activity dropdown on the Udyam portal on the day you apply and use the version it shows. MoSPI’s official NIC Finder (nicfinder.mospi.gov.in) searches both versions.
One more rule: do not blindly swap an old NIC 2008 code for a NIC 2025 code. Use the version your specific registration or filing asks for.
Why Is NIC Code Important for MSME and Udyam Registration?
The Udyam Registration Portal records the NIC Code of every registered enterprise. It tells the system whether you are engaged in manufacturing, services, or eligible trading. A correct code helps you:
- Describe your business accurately in government records.
- Avoid classification problems when applying for schemes, tenders or procurement where the nature of your activity matters.
- Keep records consistent for MSME finance, including platforms such as TReDS.
- Reduce questions from lenders, who may ask you to explain a mismatch between your NIC Code and the activity in your loan papers.
What a NIC Code Does Not Do?
Be careful here. A NIC Code alone does not decide whether you are Micro, Small or Medium. That depends on your investment and turnover under the revised MSME thresholds effective 1 April 2025. It also does not guarantee a subsidy, a loan, or automatic approval. It is one piece of accurate registration, not a magic key. (Verify current thresholds at udyamregistration.gov.in.)
How Are Traders Treated?
Wholesale and retail traders (NIC 2008 Divisions 45, 46 and 47) can register on Udyam, but for the limited purpose of Priority Sector Lending (PSL) since July 2021. So if you run a kirana store in Meerut or a mobile accessories shop in Indore, you can register and pick a Section G code. Understand the limited scope before you expect other MSME benefits.

Services span many sections: Information and communication (J), Transportation and storage (H), Accommodation and food (I), Professional and technical activities (M), Education (P), Health (Q) and more. A computer programmer in Pune and a web designer in Jaipur both land in Section J, Division 62.
How Do I Find My NIC Code Online?
Follow these steps:
- Visit the official MoSPI NIC Finder at nicfinder.mospi.gov.in.
- Type a plain-language description of your activity, such as “retail sale of garments”.
- Select NIC 2008 or NIC 2025, depending on what your form asks for.
- Review the suggested codes and choose the one closest to what you actually do.
- Cross-check it on the Udyam portal’s activity search while filling the form.
How Do I Choose the Correct NIC Code for My Business?
Pick the code that matches how you earn most of your money. Not your business name. Not a side activity.
- Match the real activity. A firm called “Sharma Enterprises” tells the system nothing.
- Use the most detailed level. Select the 5-digit sub-class, not a 2-digit division.
- Follow the revenue. If 60% of your income comes from trading and 40% from manufacturing, your primary code should be the trading one.
- Add genuine secondary activities. Udyam lets you add several codes. Mark one as primary.
- Do not add codes for activities you do not perform.
Can a Business Select Multiple NIC Codes?
Yes. Udyam allows one primary and several secondary activities. Each code must reflect something your business really does. Remember that the framework permits one Udyam Registration per PAN.
Can I Change My NIC Code After Udyam Registration?
Yes, and it is free. If your activity changes, update your registration:
- Open the Udyam portal and choose Update Udyam Registration.
- Enter your Udyam Registration Number and registered mobile number, then verify with OTP.
- Edit the activity or NIC Code section.
- Submit and download the updated certificate.
If you are still on an old Udyog Aadhaar, note that migration to Udyam is not automatic. You must register afresh on the Udyam portal.
What Happens If I Select the Wrong NIC Code?
It will not usually cancel your registration, but it can cause trouble later. A wrong code may:
- Create eligibility confusion for schemes or tenders that depend on business activity
- Mismatch with documents you submit to banks, which may then ask for clarification
- Misrepresent your activity in records on platforms such as GeM and TReDS
There is no rule that a mismatch will automatically reject a GeM bid or a TReDS payment. Still, consistency saves you headaches. Fix errors as soon as you spot them.
Is NIC Code Mandatory for Udyam Registration?
Yes. You must give at least one activity with its NIC Code to complete Udyam Registration. Without it, the form will not go through.
NIC Code vs HSN Code vs SAC Code vs Udyam Number
| Code | What it classifies | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| NIC Code | Your business activity | Udyam, company and LLP registration, statistics |
| HSN Code | Goods you sell | GST on products |
| SAC Code | Services you supply | GST on services |
| Udyam Registration Number (URN) | Your enterprise’s registration | Identity of your MSME. It is issued after registration |
The NIC Code is something you give. The Udyam registration number is something you receive. They are different things. And no, a NIC Code is not the same as an HSN or SAC code.
Where Else Is NIC Code Used?
- Company and LLP incorporation on the MCA portal, where you declare your business activity
- Udyam Registration for MSME records
- GeM, eProcure and PM Gati Shakti processes, where business activity classification can matter
- Bank and NBFC applications that refer to your Udyam details
- Government statistics on industrial production, labour and national income
Common NIC Code Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing a code because it resembles your trade name
- Picking a 2-digit or 4-digit code when the form needs the 5-digit sub-class
- Treating a side activity as the primary one
- Copying a friend’s code without checking your activity
- Mixing NIC 2008 and NIC 2025 codes
- Forgetting to update the registration after your business pivots
