Have you ever visited the Udyam Registration website, typed in some information, and clicked away because you were confused? You are not the only one. There are thousands of entrepreneurs in India who have had similar experiences of not knowing what “NIC code” means or being worried about making a mistake in a government application. But the best thing is that when you know what each field requires of you, filling up the Udyam form takes hardly 15 minutes. This article helps you fill the Udyam form accurately for the very first time.
What Is the Udyam Registration Form?
Udyam Registration is the official, online process whereby the Government of India identifies the enterprise as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise (MSME). The form is completely submitted through the government portal called Udyam Registration Portal with real-time verification of Aadhaar and PAN.
It has replaced the previous process called Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) from July 2020 onwards. For those who are still referring to it as “Udyam Aadhaar,” it means that they are talking about the same process of Aadhaar verification in the new procedure, which is not the “Udyam Aadhaar form.”
The form comprises an online form consisting of Aadhaar/PAN verification and then business information verification. It is free, does not require any uploading of any hard copies of documents and does not even require a CA/consultant.
Who Can Fill the Udyam Registration Form?
Any proprietorship, partnership firm, LLP, private or public limited company, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), co-operative society, or trust engaged in manufacturing, production, processing, or providing services can apply — as long as it falls within the current MSME investment and turnover limits.
Revised MSME Classification (effective 1 April 2025):
| Category | Investment in Plant & Machinery/Equipment | Annual Turnover |
| Micro | Up to ₹2.5 crore | Up to ₹10 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹25 crore | Up to ₹100 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹125 crore | Up to ₹500 crore |
A business is classified using a composite criterion — it must satisfy both the investment and turnover limits for a category; if it crosses either limit, it moves to the next higher category. These limits replaced the older 2020 thresholds, so don’t rely on outdated figures you may have seen elsewhere.

How To Fill The Udyam Form Correctly?
Aadhaar Number and Name of Entrepreneur
Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number exactly as it appears on the card, along with the Aadhaar holder’s name in full. Whose Aadhaar goes here depends on your business type:
- Proprietorship: The proprietor’s own Aadhaar
- Partnership firm: the managing partner’s Aadhaar
- LLP, Company, Trust, or Co-operative Society: the Aadhaar of an authorised signatory (usually a director, partner, or designated member)
The name entered must match your Aadhaar record exactly. An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked to that Aadhaar for verification — if your Aadhaar-linked number is outdated, update it with UIDAI before you start.
PAN Details
PAN is mandatory for every enterprise type. For a proprietorship, this is the individual’s PAN; for other entities, it’s the business’s own PAN. The portal auto-validates your PAN and pulls certain details (like the legal name) directly from Income Tax records — double-check this auto-filled data instead of assuming it’s correct.
Type of Organisation
Select the legal structure that matches your registration documents:
- Proprietorship.
- Partnership.
- Hindu Undivided Family (HUF).
- Limited Liability Partnership (LLP).
- Private Limited Company.
- Public Limited Company.
- Co-operative Society.
- Trust.
- Self Help Group or Others, where applicable.
Choosing the wrong structure here is a common reason applications need correction later, since it determines which PAN and Aadhaar combination the system expects.
Name of Enterprise
Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your PAN or incorporation documents. This name gets printed on your Udyam Registration Certificate and, in practice, is very difficult to change afterward except for minor spelling corrections — so proofread it carefully before submitting.
Plant/Unit Details and Location
Provide the address of your manufacturing unit, office, or place of business. If you operate from more than one location, most applicants list their primary unit here and can add additional units later through the portal’s update option. Home-based and service businesses can enter their registered office or operating address.
Official Address and Communication Details
This section covers:
- State and district, note that these usually cannot be changed after submission, so confirm before proceeding
- PIN code of your business address
- Mobile number, ideally the one linked to your Aadhaar, to avoid OTP mismatches
- Email address, your acknowledgment and Udyam registration certificate are sent here, so use one you check regularly
Date of Commencement of Business
Enter the actual date your business started operations, not your registration or incorporation date if the two differ. This should match the date on your business records, GST registration, or bank account opening documents wherever possible.
Major Activity of the Enterprise
Choose whether your enterprise is primarily engaged in:
- Manufacturing: producing or processing goods
- Services: providing services rather than physical goods
- Trading: wholesale or retail trade (eligible for Udyam Registration under limited government schemes, so check current portal guidance if this applies to you)
If your business does more than one of these, select the activity that generates the largest share of your revenue as the “major” activity, and list the others as additional activities where the form allows.
National Industrial Classification (NIC) Code
NIC Code: a standardised numerical code used by the Government of India to classify the exact nature of economic activity a business performs.
This is one of the fields entrepreneurs get wrong most often. The NIC code isn’t just a formality — it determines how your enterprise activity is recorded for statistical and scheme-eligibility purposes. To select it correctly:
- Search the NIC code list using keywords that describe your actual product or service (not a broad industry term).
- Pick the most specific matching code, not a generic “other” category, unless nothing else fits.
- Add multiple NIC codes if you genuinely run more than one distinct activity.
Common mistake: copying a NIC code from a similar business without checking whether it matches your own actual activity — this can cause issues later if you apply for activity-specific schemes.
Investment in Plant and Machinery or Equipment
This is the written down value (WDV) of your plant, machinery, or equipment as per your latest Income Tax Return, not the original purchase price. For new businesses without a prior ITR, the figure is entered on a self-declaration basis. Do not use the pre-2025 investment limits (₹1 crore / ₹10 crore / ₹50 crore) to judge your category — the revised limits shown in the table above now apply.
Annual Turnover
Enter turnover excluding export turnover, since exports are excluded from the MSME turnover calculation for classification purposes. If you have a GSTIN, your turnover figure may be auto-fetched from GST records; if not, it’s entered based on your ITR or business records. Keep this figure accurate — turnover is one of the two criteria used to classify and, later, to reclassify your enterprise.
GST Details
GSTIN is required for enterprises that are mandatorily registered under GST law. If your business is below the GST registration threshold and not required to register, you can typically proceed without one — but as GST rules apply independently of Udyam Registration, verify your own GST applicability separately rather than assuming Udyam exemption also means GST exemption.
Bank Account Details
Provide your business’s active bank account number and IFSC code. This links your Udyam profile to banking and payment-related government systems and can generally be updated later if entered incorrectly.
Social Category and Number of Employees
Select your applicable social category (General/SC/ST/OBC) and enter the number of persons employed, split by gender where the form asks. These fields feed into government MSME statistics and, in some cases, scheme eligibility — enter accurate current figures rather than estimates.
Final Declaration and Submission
Before submitting:
- Review every field on the summary screen
- Tick the self-declaration checkbox confirming the information is accurate
- Enter the final OTP sent to your mobile number
- Submit the form
On successful submission, you’ll receive a Udyam Registration Number (URN), followed by your Udyam Registration Certificate by email — save both immediately.
Common Mistakes To Avoid While Filling the Udyam Form
- Entering an Aadhaar number that doesn’t belong to the correct applicant type (proprietor, partner, or authorised signatory).
- Using a mobile number not linked to the Aadhaar being verified, causing OTP failures.
- Selecting the wrong “Type of Organisation,” which mismatches your PAN structure.
- Misspelling the enterprise name, which is difficult to correct afterward.
- Picking a generic or unrelated NIC code instead of one that matches your actual activity.
- Entering original purchase cost instead of written-down value for plant and machinery
- Including export turnover in the annual turnover figure.
- Relying on the pre-April 2025 MSME investment and turnover limits.
- Submitting without reviewing the auto-filled PAN or GST data.
- Leaving the state/district field wrong, since it usually can’t be edited later.
- Rushing through the final declaration without checking every section.

What Happens After Submitting the Udyam Form?
Once, your details are verified against Aadhaar, PAN, Income Tax, and GST databases in the background. There’s no separate manual approval step for most applicants — the Udyam Registration Number is generated immediately after successful verification, and the Udyam Registration Certificate (a QR-coded e-certificate) is issued and emailed to you. You can also log back into the portal anytime to download the certificate or update details such as address, NIC code, or turnover if your business circumstances change.

FAQs
First validate your Aadhaar and PAN, followed by giving correct details of your business including the type of organization, enterprise name, address, NIC code, investment and turnover. Validate all the fields in the summary page before submitting through the last OTP.
You will have to give details such as applicant’s Aadhaar number, PAN of business, GSTIN if applicable, enterprise name and address, date of starting, NIC code, bank details and investment in plant machinery/turnover.
The Aadhaar of the proprietor should be taken in case of proprietorship, managing partner in case of partnership firm and authorized signatory in case of LLP, company, trust or society.
Search the list of NIC codes using the relevant key words describing the product or service you provide and then select the most relevant one instead of a very broad or irrelevant one. You can use multiple codes if you are involved in multiple activities.
Most of the fields such as address, NIC code, turnover, bank account etc. can be modified in the Udyam portal post-registration. But few fields such as enterprise name, PAN, etc., are not easy to modify.
If you must get GST registration due to your business’s turnover and business activities, then you have to provide your GST number. Those who do not require GST registration may apply for Udyam registration without GSTIN.
You should never use any other NIC code, write purchase price instead of written-down price of machinery, include the export turnover, or use 2025 MSME limits in the classification.
The certificate is sent automatically to your email ID once you complete the registration process. You can always re-login to your account on the Udyam Registration Portal and download your Udyam Registration Certificate from there.
